Puss Gets the Boot (1940)

USA, 1940
35mm film, black and white, 1.37:1
mono, English

An American animated fantasy film directed by an uncredited Joseph Barbera and William Hanna. Although the eponymous feline was referred to as Jasper by the production team, this is generally held to be the first of the Tom and Jerry cartoons. During the 1960s, Chuck Jones’ Sib Tower 12 Productions rotoscoped out the character of Mammy Two-Shoes, replacing her with a young Irish woman. Thirty years later, the original footage was restored but Mammy’s voice had been changed.

Plot Summary

Jasper the cat is in trouble – if he breaks one more thing around the house, he’ll be kicked out. It’s too good an opportunity for mischievous mouse Jerry to miss…
