PLOT SUMMARY
Gay alcoholic writer Reve starts to have strange
hallucinations on a visit to Amsterdam wher he delivers a speech.
He is seduced by beautician Christine, but is secretly more attracted
to her plumber boyfriend Herman. As his hallucinations become more
bizarre and frightening, Reve comes to suspect that Christine is a
murderer who has already seen off three husbands – and either
he or Herman is about to become the fourth man.
CAPSULE REVIEW
Verhoeven's dry run for the later, inferior, Basic
Instinct (1992), De vierde man will disappoint
anyone familiar only with the director's later Hollywood films.
With great performances, a provocative script and some wonderfully
surreal moments, it's a quietly impressive film, one with something
to offend just about everyone and one that certainly deserves a wider
audience.
