PLOT SUMMARY
Novelist Jack Torrance is in search of inspiration. He takes his wife
Wendy and young son Danny to the bleak and remote Overlook hotel where
they are to be caretakers for the long winter months. But Danny has
a gift, "the shining" which allows him to communicate telepathically
with the ghosts that haunt to Overlook. His father, meanwhile, is being
driven insane by his own encounters with the haunting spirits and soon
decides that his family must die...
CAPSULE REVIEW
Much misunderstood at the time - mainly by Stephen King fans who were
appalled at the liberties Kubrick took with the novel - The Shining
has matured well and now looks like one of the horror genre crowning
achievements. It has a creepy atmosphere that even overcomes Nicholson's
over-enthusiastic performance and the final scenes in the wintry maze
are both terrifying and poignant. The twin ghost girls are magnificent
spooky and the hotel itself becomes an oppressive and sinister character
in its own right. Beautifully photographed and designed, for the most
part well acted and, of course, directed with the genius we've come
to expect from Kubrick.
