CAPSULE REVIEW
History of the
World isn't an entirely successful film - there
are far too many jokes that fail for that - but it's
still head and shoulders above Brooks' later work. The
episodic format suits Brooks well and it's a surprise
that he hasn't used it again and when he gets it right, History
of the World contains much that's among his best
work - the Spanish Inquisition sequence, for example, and
the wonderful Jews in Space skit. The writing was already
on the wall for Brook's style of screen comedy, but History
of the World was one last hurrah for a once
great screen comic.
