PLOT SUMMARY

Fifteen years after the McNeil exorcism in Georgetown, Detective Kinderman meets with Father Dyer every year on the anniversary of Father Damien Karras' death while saving Reagan McNeil from the demon Pazuzu. This year, though, Kinderman has his mind on other things - a series of killings has occurred that bear the hallmarks of The Gemini, a serial-killer that Kinderman helped to have executed fifteen years ago. And in the depths of a psychiatric hospital is a man who claims to be The Gemini Killer, a man with a very familiar face...

CAPSULE REVIEW

Wisely choosing to ignore the bizarre nonsense of Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), William Peter Blatty made only his second stab at directing (following the impressive The Ninth Configuration (1980) with this stunning adaptation of his own follow-up to the book that made his name a by-word for the macabre and disturbing throughout the 1970s. Literate and powerful, Exorcist III is a genre rarity, a horror film that revels in the power of words, that requires - and gets - first class performances and which aims more for the head than for the viscera. A mature and thoughtful film aimed at a mature and thoughtful audience.
