PLOT SUMMARY

Catherine Fengriffen is raped on her wedding night by a one-handed man. She discovers her husband's grandfather brought a curse on the family when he violated the new wife of one of his tenant farmers and cut off the protesting farmer's hand. Her baby bears the same facial birthmark as her rapist, but she eventually accepts it as her child.
